What is wrong with Palm Oil? Everything.

We've been watching Showtime's Years of Living Dangerously which is interesting but depressing. Of course it is the type of show that gives you all kinds of new concerns that are even worse than the ones you already had. We recently learned that an ingredient that is in almost every processed product in your house is responsible for the rapid deforestation of Indonesia that's way worse than anything going on in Brazil. And, of course, it's also therefore responsible for the murder of innocent orangutans that are not only adorable, but areso close to us that they are pretty much people. Just look at this guy:

And even if you don't care about orangutans, if you enjoy breathing relatively clean air you should care about this issue. Of course we hardly hear anything about this in the U.S. All the rich corporations who sell us stuff don't care at all about what damage they leave in their wakes and the onus is always on the consumer to discover the shady disgusting crap that goes on so that we can get fat off of eating super cheap Twix bars.

If you are interested, there is a list of companies with good/bad policies here:

Palm Oil Scorecard

You shouldn't be eating any of that overly-processed garbage food anyway, but the household products are hard to escape. Ingredients that pretty much all soaps and cleansers contain may or may not come from palm oil--you'll never know unless you make a concerted effort to find out. Even Burt's Bees gets a "fail". There goes my lip balm...sigh.

Excuse me if I'm a bit melancholy tonight

One year ago tonight I was in Dar es Salaam waiting to meet my overland tour. Three years ago tonight I was in Cusco consuming copious amounts of pisco sours and local vino. Homemade pizza and some Turley zinfandel was nice but a little anti-climactic. At least I've got these guys!
